Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD)
( UPSC Prelims)
News Context
A study commissioned by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser suggested reversing the 2015 policy that required the installation of FGD systems in all of India's coal-fired plants. Instead, it advised that FGD should be installed only in plants that use imported coal or coal with a high sulphur content (greater than 0.5%).
About FGD
• Elimination of SO2 (Sulphur Dioxide) from the exhaust emissions of coal-powered plants prior to atmospheric release.
• Employs a scrubbing method that uses an alkaline reagent (usually based on sodium or calcium).
• Varieties of FGD Systems include Dry Sorbent Injection, Wet Limestone Based, Sea Water Based, and others.
