Greater one-horned Rhino ( UPSC Prelims)

News Context

The Assam Forest Department has initiated the DNA profiling of rhino horns and is incorporating this data into the Rhino DNA Index System (RhoDIS), part of the India DNA data library.
 Habitat:
      ○ Assam is home to the world's largest rhino population.
      ○ Over 90% of these rhinos reside in Kaziranga National Park.
 Characteristics:
      ○ The Indian rhino is one of the five rhino species: two African species—White Rhino (Near Threatened) and Black Rhino (Critically Endangered), and three Asian species—Sumatran (Critically Endangered), Javan (Critically Endangered), and the Indian Rhino, which is the largest among all Asian rhino species.
      ○ Indian rhinos are typically solitary.
      ○ Males have loosely defended territories.
 Conservation initiatives:
      ○ The National Rhino Conservation Strategy 2019 for the Indian rhino, the New Delhi Declaration on Asian Rhinos 2019, and the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 are some of the key conservation efforts.
