National Green Tribunal
About: A statutory and specialized body designed for the efficient and swift resolution of cases concerning environmental protection and the conservation of forests and other natural resources.
Genesis: Formed in 2010 under the NGT Act, 2010 to handle environmental cases.
Headquarters and Principal Place of Sitting: New Delhi
Other four places of sitting: Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai
Powers: Possesses the authority of a Civil Court under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.
○ Not restricted by the procedures of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 or the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
○ Guided by the Principles of Natural Justice.
○ Required to resolve applications/appeals within 6 months of filing.
Members: Serve for 5 years, with no eligibility for re-appointment.
Eligibility of Chairperson: Must be a Judge of the Supreme Court or a Chief Justice of a High Court.
Appeal: Orders are binding but not final (the body can review its judgments or an appeal can be made to the Supreme Court within ninety days).
