A documentary about efforts to save these creatures in Kasargod, Kerala has been honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke award.
Habitat:
These turtles inhabit large lowland rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and estuarine areas, including mangrove channels and coastal mudflats near river mouths. Known as Cantor's giant softshell turtle, this long freshwater turtle is found in South and South-east Asia. It is listed under WPA, 1972 Schedule I, CITES Appendix, and is classified as CR (Critically Endangered).
In Kerala, it is referred to as Bhimanama (where "bhiman" means giant and "aama" means turtle).
Characteristics:
These turtles have a flattened head and widely spaced eyes. They are ambush predators known for their aggressive behavior, capable of a lightning speed strike and possessing a powerful jaw.
