Planetary Boundaries ( UPSC Prelims)

News Context

The Planetary Health Check (PHC) 2025, published by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), offers a scientific evaluation concerning Planetary Boundaries (PBs).

About Planetary Boundaries (PBs)

 ● Planetary Boundaries (PBs) are ecological limits that establish the "safe operating space" within which humanity can exist without jeopardizing the environment.
      ○ There are nine critical processes essential for sustaining global stability, resilience, and life-support functions.
      ○ Current Status: Out of the nine Planetary Boundaries, seven have been exceeded, with the exceptions being Atmospheric Aerosol Loading and Stratospheric Ozone Depletion. Additionally, Ocean Acidification has surpassed its safe operating space for the first time.

Nine Planetary Boundaries include

Climate change, Biosphere Integrity alteration, Land System Transformation, Freshwater Alteration, Biogeochemical Flow Modification, Emergence of Novel Entities, Ocean Acidification, Rise in Atmospheric Aerosol Concentration, Stratospheric Ozone Layer Depletion.
