The African Union has recently become the 54th member of India’s Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). This announcement was made during the 7th International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (ICDRI) held in France.
About ICDRI 2025
ICDRI 2025 Overview
○ A call to action was initiated for coastal resilience in SIDS (Small Island Developing States), emphasizing 10 specific actions to facilitate finance, such as the introduction of the SIDS Global Data Hub 2.0.
● ICDRI serves as a platform under CDRI that promotes discussions and actions on climate adaptation and coastal resilience.
○ This marks the first occasion the conference is being held in Europe, co-hosted by CDRI and France.
○ The theme is Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions.
5 Key Global Priorities to Strengthen Disaster Resilience: Outlined by Indian PM
Incorporating Disaster Resilience into Education. Developing a Global Digital Repository. Encouraging Innovative Financing. Reasserting India's acknowledgment of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as Large Ocean Nations. Enhancing Early Warning Systems.
Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure
Launched: At the United Nations Climate Action Summit in 2019 by India.
▷ A global partnership involving national governments, UN agencies, multilateral development banks, and the private sector.
Objective: To enhance the resilience of infrastructure systems against climate and disaster risks.
Members: 56 members
Reports: Global Infrastructure Resilience Report
Governing Council: Co-chaired by representatives from two national governments, with India serving as a permanent co-chair.
Initiatives
▷ Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS): Targeted at SIDS.
▷ Infrastructure Resilience Accelerator Fund: Created in collaboration with UNDP and UNDRR.
Indian Initiatives for Mitigating Coastal Vulnerabilities
● Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification (2019)
● Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (ICZMP): Implemented in regions such as Odisha and West Bengal.
● Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI): Created by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
● Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Maps: Produced by INCOIS.
