River Mandovi/Mhadei/Mahadayi ( UPSC Prelims)

News Context

The Centre has prolonged the tenure of the Mahadayi Water Tribunal by one year in accordance with the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956. The river originates from Bhimgad in the Western Ghats located in Belagavi, Karnataka. It converges with the Zuari River, and both rivers eventually discharge into the Arabian Sea, creating the Mormugao Harbour. The river flows predominantly through Goa (covering two-thirds of its course), with the remainder passing through Karnataka and Maharashtra. Notable waterfalls along the river include Dudhsagar and Varapoha. The river's tributary is the River Mapusa.
