- Tracheal System:
- A network of branched tubes (tracheae) spread throughout the body.
- Tracheae open to the outside through small openings called spiracles.
- Spiracles:
- Located on the lateral sides of the body.
- There are 10 pairs in total:
- 2 pairs in the thorax.
- 8 pairs in the abdomen.
- Equipped with valves to regulate airflow and prevent water loss.
- Tracheoles:
- Fine branches of the tracheae that reach individual cells.
- Thin-walled and fluid-filled to facilitate gas exchange directly at the cellular level.
- Air Sacs:
- Enlargements of the tracheae to store air and maintain buoyancy.
Mechanism of Respiration in Cockroach
Respiration in cockroaches occurs without blood involvement and relies on the diffusion of gases through the tracheal system.
Steps in the Mechanism:
- Inhalation:
- Air enters through the spiracles, which open in a controlled manner.
- The air passes into the tracheae and then to the tracheoles.
- Gas Exchange:
- Oxygen diffuses directly into the tissues from the tracheoles.
- Carbon dioxide from the tissues diffuses into the tracheoles.
- Exhalation:
- Carbon dioxide moves through the tracheae to the spiracles.
- Spiracles open to release carbon dioxide.
- Role of Body Movements:
- Rhythmic contraction and relaxation of abdominal muscles (called abdominal pumping) help ventilate the tracheal system.
- Ensures efficient air circulation within the tracheal tubes.
